In early 2016, I purchased a classic Kauri launch, designed and built by Salthouse Brothers in the early 1960s called “Kailua”. I had some plans to “just tidy her up” and engaged Neil and Ben at Nautique to do that. The “tidy up” was such a rewarding experience for us, that we quickly changed the brief into a full refit, inside and out. Neil and Ben were a pleasure to work with. They’ve got a great eye for the aesthetic, and design. Their wooden boatbuilding skills are excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed the project, helped by the fact that Nautique was always on budget, they never complained about the fussy client changing his brief from time to time, and they appeared to love the project too. In her finished state, Kailua is a real testament to them and their workmanship.

We set out to refurbish and modernise a beautiful Salthouse 65’ Passagemaker while retaining her original classic looks. Neil designed a number of clever solutions, in close collaboration with us, that brought the best of form, utility and function together. All work was finished to the highest standard including anything involving a traditional custom wood finish. Nautique take good care to ensure that they get things right the first time and we know that the team share the same passion and vision for our lovely boat as we do - that’s why we have asked Neil to lead all of our projects. Do it once, do it right, make it art!

Stephen chose the Nautique yard to complete the work and reports that with the team of Ben & Neil, the craftsmanship and project management was great and he only has good things to say about them. He joked to me that in the past he has built a few houses, and it’s hard to rave about your builders at the end of the project, but with these guys it's been the exception.
