The Team behind Nautique

Neil Williamson

Neil Williamson

Neil Williamson, a professional boat builder, prides himself on maintaining excellent standards of workmanship. He has vast practical experience, building and repairing both wooden and composite vessels and is able to conceptualise and carry out projects, from warranty work on new builds to major refits on super yachts.

Neil began boatbuilding in 1986, completing his apprenticeship in the early 90’s at one of the top composite boatbuilders in the world, Cookson Boats. Neil’s years at Cooksons provided him with a strong background in FRP structures and experience in building to IOR and America’s Cup specifications, including lofting and design. From there, Neil went on to a number of increasingly responsible positions working in different specialist areas, such as interior fitouts, deck layout and engineering.

As an experienced project manager and marine consultant, Neil worked for many years in the Middle East with a variety of responsibilities, including running service and charter operations for leading luxury boat companies and skippering yachts.  For two years, he held the position of Chief Engineer on the shadow yacht Red Sapphire Shadow (58 metres), owned by H.E. Major General Al Ali. Neil returned from Dubai in 2011 to grow Nautique Ltd., a company he started in 2001, partnering with Ben in 2013. In his spare time, Neil works on his own boats, restoring ‘Arawa’, a 1937, 26’ gaff rig cutter and ‘Safari’, a 1942 launch.

Ben Freedman

Ben Freedman

Ben has been involved in yachting and boating his whole life. Having owned many yachts Ben has finally cut his fleet down to two yachts, Valeria, an Arch
Logan built 1913 classic mullet boat, and Sirocco a Townson 9.2.

With a passion for timber work and a determination for perfection and customer service Ben focuses on the interior, marine cabinetry and teak decking projects often constructing bespoke items for our clients.
Ben also runs the operations and accounting side of the company.

In early 2016, I purchased a classic Kauri launch, designed and built by Salthouse Brothers in the early 1960s called “Kailua”. I had some plans to “just tidy her up” and engaged Neil and Ben at Nautique to do that. The “tidy up” was such a rewarding experience for us, that we quickly changed the brief into a full refit, inside and out. Neil and Ben were a pleasure to work with. They’ve got a great eye for the aesthetic, and design. Their wooden boatbuilding skills are excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed the project, helped by the fact that Nautique was always on budget, they never complained about the fussy client changing his brief from time to time, and they appeared to love the project too. In her finished state, Kailua is a real testament to them and their workmanship.

Stephen Langton

We set out to refurbish and modernise a beautiful Salthouse 65’ Passagemaker while retaining her original classic looks. Neil designed a number of clever solutions, in close collaboration with us, that brought the best of form, utility and function together. All work was finished to the highest standard including anything involving a traditional custom wood finish. Nautique take good care to ensure that they get things right the first time and we know that the team share the same passion and vision for our lovely boat as we do - that’s why we have asked Neil to lead all of our projects. Do it once, do it right, make it art!

Bennett Medary

Stephen chose the Nautique yard to complete the work and reports that with the team of Ben & Neil, the craftsmanship and project management was great and he only has good things to say about them. He joked to me that in the past he has built a few houses, and it’s hard to rave about your builders at the end of the project, but with these guys it's been the exception.
